Feldenkrais Method
with Helena
I am a Feldenkrais practitioner and physiotherapist based in Prague. I help people with various movement difficulties to improve and feel more comfortable in their bodies as well as in their lives.
Thanks to my passion for languages, I can provide individual sessions in Czech, English, German, Italian and Spanish.
What is the Feldenkrais Method?
The Feldenkrais Method promotes a natural way of learning through movement. This approach leads to improvement in function, expands one’s repertoire of movements and skills and enhances awareness not only in movement activities but also in other areas of human life. Through these benefits, it assists people to live their lives more fully, comfortably and with freedom.
The Feldenkrais Method can be beneficial for anyone, regardless of their age and physical condition, who wants to develop their movement skills and abilities, broaden the range of their possibilities, improve perception of their own body, replace non-functional movement habits with functional ones and move and live with more ease and freedom.
Moshé Feldenkrais treated people with various movement difficulties ranging from back pain to various neurological conditions (MS, stroke etc.), developmental disorders and post-injury conditions. He also worked with children (e.g. cerebral palsy kids). He often worked with dancers, actors and musicians, in short, with people that make use of movement in their profession.
The Feldenkrais Method uses two modalities – individual sessions which Moshé called Functional Integration (FI) and group classes called Awareness Through Movement (ATM).
Functional Integration
Functional Integration (FI) is individual hands-on work with a client. The practitioner uses a gentle and precise touch and movement to explore client’s movement habits, muscle tone, functional connections of various parts of the body and how the client organizes his body during movement. Thanks to the touch, movement and attention of the practitioner, the client is able to become aware of his habits and the practitioner offers him new, more functional movement options and integrates them into a bigger picture. The lesson is tailored to the individual requirements and needs of the client.
The client is mostly lying on the back, belly or side on a special table during an FI. The final part of the lesson might be done also in sitting, standing or walking.
The whole session lasts one hour, with approximately 50 minutes hands-on work on the table. The first session might be a bit longer. The client should be dressed in comfortable clothing allowing free movement. Clean socks are recommended as we often work with the feet.
